Hi people...

I am just so confused this past few weeks of my life.. I have this not much complicated decision to make so maybe somebody outhere can do some good advice.. especially those who are really doing good in "CAREER WISE" decision.. hehehe I am 28 y/o, living with my husband and 1 daughter here in Doha.

Presently working as Financial Controller with one of the European companies which is based in Doha, they have good project but maybe it will be maximum for 5 years (current project), so it means after 5 years they'll be moving out.. unless otherwise, getting new project again to pro long their stay in Doha.. I got good salaries, good package and having 40 working hours a week or less (sometime).. and the most important factor is I LIKE EVERYBODY here.. and they like me as well, they are mostly European and I have flexible time.. (heheh) I even have alot of time for QL..

and few weeks I got a good offer, same package but the salaries is much higher but the company is just a small company but Local one which has been established older than my age. And when I visit the company, i realized that they dont even have accounting software .. (hehe old fashioned) which i need to do the job in excell, words and powerpoint only.. so I'm afraid I cannot cope up with latest technology if I am going to move in that company..

So what shall I do? Stay in my current company or move in to much higher salaries??

Need your advice guys..

From a fellow filipino viewpoint, you will not find a job similar to your existing job anywhere.

Just think of it, you are blessed. In my case, I will be leaving the Philippines this April 1. I was offered a position in Doha. I have to take this option because I have no choice. But you, I believe you are already in the "comfort zone"

In the philippines, you would probably be working in a BPO. But here you are working for a high paying MNC and your work life balance seems good and I must say really really good.

"Don't let your life fit in to your job, rather, fit your job to your life!". In other words, if money is not your prime concern, then what matters most is your happines -- a quality work life.

As I read all your messages.. most of it are true, I am just afraid maybe after this project I need to find another company.

I guess you are right busy bird and serenpidity, they are always welcome for promotions and just today, I got a good response from them for additional perks (lets say).. The only problem for me is that you know, when I got used to my job and it become routinary I immediately got bored, I want something that will challenge my ability. Something that, I could do something unusual.. (hehehe) of course that will benefits the company. Well, it's kind a I have toaccept the truth..Need to learn more but maybe better if I will take short courses not by changing my career

Anyway, thanks Guys... QL did really good job.. keep posting your advices when somebody needs it.. It's really a big help.

You need to seriously consider advise from Serendipity and busybird.

I work for a reputed Brand Name sponsored by a well know local company, also I have a few friends working in various companies, local and MNC. Working for the local, we all are at the whims of the sponsor and his cronies.

If you can get a chance, speak to employees of the company you want to transfer after working hours and get their feedback.

Nobody can tell you what to do, only give personal experience and advise.

Hello Armie

Based on what you had outlined.......my honest and firm advice to u would be not to waste your time any further thinking over switching your job to a local company just for a salary hike...

Im sure you would be making the biggest mistake...

40 hrs a week...and working for a foreign company....as a financial controller...

You can think about moving out after 5 years or whenever the project gets completed...

If they are very 'stuck in the mud' with their attitudes towards improving their business practices, then I think you also need to think about the longer term impact on your career.

Yes, you might want to work for them long term, because at the moment, you feel you need the stability and security because of your husband and child.

But you need to bear in mind that if your circumstances change, if you need to move to another country with your spouse and get a job elsewhere, then your business practices will be really out of date, you not only won't have been using modern accounting software, but also, you won't have learned any new advances either, which come along from now, over the next few years.

Once you start working for that company, it would be quite difficult for you to move on to a different job in a different company, I think, because you won't be able to develop and improve your skills in the same way you have been doing. To my mind, it could potentially have an adverse effect on your resume in the long term and your longer term career options.

And to me, you sound like you enjoy your current job, you seem like a progressive person who lives a new challenge, to learn new things (maybe also a reason why you're considering this new job). Given your progressive and modern attitude, would you really be suited to working in such a backwards environment as the other antiquated company?

Are there any opportunities for promotion where you are working now? Maybe you could earn a higher salary in the company where you are working now if you got promoted?

Serendipity, Thanks for the advise but I did asked them if they have plans of getting rid such a old fashioned computer unit and other stuff which can be replaced by new tech.. It looks like they don't mind it... The manager attitude, is not such an open minded about changes as long as the company runs with such good business..

Angelo, sometimes such bad notion " about the locals" are not healthy but it's true even the biggest companies here...Anyway, I cannot publish (of course) the company name.. for some privacy but I think I will stick to your advice... HOWEVER, i still have a lot of time to think...

Thank you guys...

Personally, I would not trust a local company.

Get all details before you decide to change. From my knowledge, working with an MNC is better than a local. At the local you will be governed by the whims and fancies of the sponsor, there will be no set rules.

If you have been reading the post in QL, that should be enough to decide against a local company. You get promised one thing and what you actually get is another.

If you can mention the name of the sponsor or name of company, maybe people will be able to advise better.

But for me, a local is a big no no.

Happy hunting.

The alternative company: are they going to stay in the technological dark ages? Or do they want to employ you because they want to upgrade their systems and modernise their accounting methods?

Ask them. If you can get them to implement the modern accounting software systems that you are used to, and even if they are resistant, if you can persuade them how much more efficient it will be, what the benefits are in terms of generating different types of reports and forecasts and so on.

Maybe you can get the best of both worlds? Maybe you can get them to upgrade and modernise and you can also benefit from a higher salary?
