Job offer *stallled* - or am I being taken for a ride?

By rockwallaby

Hello,

I had applied for a senior IT position in a new sports-medicine hospital. I think it has been the topic of conversation before and I believe they even have a web-site running. This site does not feature the position adverstised here in Australia.

I was quite interested in this postion and after reading this forum for a while I was enthusiastic about a relocation to Doha.

The whole process started about 3 months ago and has presently stalled. Taking into consideration Ramadan and perhaps the Games perhaps this is to be expected. However my prodding of the employment agency now indicates that employers have a government ratio of nationalities they can employ as part of their organisation and it appears that there may already be too many Australian/NZ employee's.

I have not read this before - certainly not on this forum.

My question is:-

Is this complete crap [ rubbish ] that I am being spun or is there truth in it?

By the way, I think the forum is excellent.

If I/we never get there, at least I tried ! Cheers.

Oakspan,

You seem to be contradicting yourself............

You may want to clarify in your last postthat you were quoting someone else reagdring - "The Hospital has the potential to be World class, but suffers from its relationship with Aspirezone, which is a complete and utter shambles. Aspirezone effectively controls key QOSMH decisions, and incapacity to make rational reasonable decisions for themselves, unfortunately affects QOSMH. There was an IT/Infrastructure Manager in that position until recently. He lasted only 4 months, and was sent back to the USA. Be wary, be very wary!"

At first read, it looked like this is what you were saying. I actually thought you were some coward, changing your name from deoscientiaque and posting the same misinformation I read previously. Only on re-reading your post did I realize you were quoting deoscientiaque.

Just for clarification Sports City has three independent business units Aspire Zone who are building the hospital and control all the venues, Aspire Academy who run the sports academy and aspetar ( or QOSMH) which is the Sports Hospital. They are each independent and report directly through their managing directors to same Sheikh. All three have to meet very standards. There is truth to rumour of tensions but that's the norm as Aspetar want to to open and get Aspire Zone out from under their feet. Completing any project in Qatar is maddening but they eventually always get there.

The main vacancies I know are left in the sports Hospital are in IT, Nursing (theaters), resident doctors, ward clerks and receptionists, catering staff ( waitresses through to cooks and valets), finance staff, male physios. I saw this in their in house newsletter so its reliable.

Some kind of problems as they switch from US based servors to their local hardware I think. I heard they will fix the link as some of their staff post on this website and reported the problem.

Sorry Gary but for some jobs the competition is fierce I heard they grabbed an outstanding expatriate person from Saudi for that CSSD manager job. Just bad luck. I know they are moving fast to fill all the pre-opening positions.

Well I heard in a IT is still desperate to get high quality candidates as they are going to implement a paperlite environment with I think GE/IDX. There was quota on Aust/NZ but this is removed was for high need areas. They have quotas to try and keep a truly international mix and not have any one nationality dominate though i hear its very hard for Indian and Fillipina nurses to get into the hospital as they favour Caucasions and Arabs. The IT Director is an Australian Peter Dickason so try him direct on peter.dickason@qosmc and by pass your agents if you want a quck assessment of your CV. I know he was after business Analysts in particular. Looking at the hardware and software they are purchasing it looks like its going to be an amazing set up but very busy and challenging.

Oh and the USA/Jordanian guy that was "sent home" was from Aspire Academy not the hospital and i heard he went to the Al Jazeera TV station so don't believe the negative rumours.

Hi All,

I don't have a great experience with QOSMC either. I was contacted by an agent after he viewed my CV on Monster Jobs. He made me aware of a CSSD Managers position, for which I am fully Qualified. He contacted the employers who agreed to call me on Thursday Morning..... They did call, but only to tell me this position was no longer vacant!!!!! Gob Smacked.

If anyone knows of any similar jobs, please let me know.

Cheers

Hello Tsardoz,

Thanks for that news. I haved called my agent in Sydney and let him know, exactly, what you have told me. He has been as frustrated as me I think; if he cannot place people he makes no money !

This might be the start of an exciting 2007 - as long as they have not filled either of the positions I had been chasing.

Thanks again - and if you hear any more news, please keep it coming through.

Cheers

The 20% quota on Australians has been lifted.

Try your agents again.

How do I know?

I just signed a contract for the hospital yesterday and I am an Aussie (was also informed by the COO the quota has been lifted).

I just tried it again today and they have removed the link. it was there on the 4th when I replied and posted, but today it is gone.

Thanks Jolene, Canuk and Bardu

From your respective comments, the only logical story is that this link was existing but was removed at one point for some good reason....or a software imcompatibility :-))

Being open minded, i tried again this morning and no way to get to any HR link, like Jolene ..

Canuk, since you can enter there, would please send me the full link that you have on your browser adress like here http://www.qatarliving.com/discussion/job-offer-stallled-or-am-i-being-taken-for-a-ride-05dec2006

Other way, If somebody is working there (seems some are a lot on this forum in which a HR), could he kindly ask the HR Dpt on how to apply when there is no website link?

Thanks all

Greetings form south of France

hello,I think there was a link for vacancies there in advance.Coz I remember that I had visited that web site and applied some jobs. But now there is no place to apply, they must have deleted this place to prevent more application.Im sure they used to get many unnecessary applications.

Best regards

i have tried it!!!!!!!!!! Several times! in fact!!!!!! There is ABSOLUTELY. DEFINATELY a jobs link!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again, re-read my post. got to the TOP RIGHT Corner of the screen, right above the CONTACTS box. At the very top, you will see Qatar orthopaedic and Sports medicine Hospital as Title, go a little to the right and you see the word Home and just to the right of that you see a word Jobs. click on the jobs and you get a listing of positions (although I am not sure if it is updated) and you can find a contact for HR there.

that said, if you have already applied and been in cotact, there isn't much information otehrwise as of yet.

By jolene• 4 Jan 2007 12:36

No offence but I'm with Tarik on the whole website thing! Everytime I click on your link there is only 3 boxes and a phone number! Absolutely, defintely no other links! Believe I have clicked on your link many a time to check to see if I missed anything!!

You try it!

Tarik,

Sorry, I don't know how to help you, short of soming to your house and clicking on the links myself. look at the website, in the top right hand side, there is a link for jobs!

Listening to your posts I my interest in taking up one of the IT posts at QOSMH has been given a fresh injection of enthusiasm. Perhaps it is the New Year.

I don't know if either can assist but if there is anyway you can enquire or let the appropriate people know they have an enthusiastic potential employee - well what can I can except that I would be extremely grateful and happy to shout a beer or two if I was successful.

I am patient - but as mentioned before - I think the job is slipping by because of nationality ratio's.

Cheers and thanks again for the replies.

I've just got a job there & I'm Australian (coming from Bahrain - don't know if that makes a difference). My visa took about 2 weeks.

However - I had to wait about 3 months before my employers made the decision. I have heard that quick decision making is not a Qatari virtue.

My feedback for what its worth is that visas for Pakistanis and Indians are difficult to get because their quotas are near full but that for westerners its comparatively easy.

My only advice would be to contact the hospital via the web site. My agent is working out of Sydney and I think is only interested in recruiting Australians and New Zealanders - but if you are interested I will ask.

If the agent here is interested and things work out for you then perhaps we will meet sometime in the future. You can teach me french :-)

Great to hear some positive comments. From what I had heard from other sources the place is very good and the potential is enormous.

As mentioned before, the fact I now seemed to be on the outer because of the ratio of nationalities employed is quite a disappointment. I had applied for both client services manager and infrastructure manager.

By the way - got a good payroll and hr system happening? I am the technical manager for Frontier Software here in South Australia. That is a bit of a joke really; I am not pushing the product - I seem to be dealing with a few hr and payroll managers since I have been in this position and it is unique to talk to one about a new job instead of providing technical support.

Cheers

Tarik............not sure what fake website you looked at. If you look at www.qosmc.com you will find a link for jobs. On there their is a link for HR and you can send your CV there. Good luck.

Deoscientiaque ................. I am with Boo and Cranks on this one. I don't work in HR but have been here some months now and never heard of an American in IT who was sent home after 4 months. I have been here 4 months and the chances are good that I would have heard about someone being sent home.

Hi all

I was told about the abovementioned comments about the American who was sent home but spent 4 months in IT.

What a crock! I work at QOSMH and I am in HR and there has NEVER been anyone in the role of Infrastructure Manager. We have not sent anyone home to the US or any other country for that matter. All of our staff are still on board and nobody has been fired or had their contract broken.

So, wherever you get your information, it is of very very poor quality.

Let me assure you all that our hospital is a world class facility run by world class professionals.

Get off the rumour mill and do something better with your time. If you are going to repeat a story - best for your reputation that you make sure it is correct.

You at least got through the process !

I am a Sport Medecine Doctor, from France and could not even got a way to contact anybody there.

I had a bad experience with some fake website, in which i posted my resume added to the fact that sometime they just delete the mail without really reading it that I wonder if you could help to guide me to this hospital HR Dpt.

Any hint, help would be appreciated

Merry christmas and happy new year

Hi Andcat,

I have recently spoken to the agent who seems to think the whole ratio of nationalities has become more difficult. From what I understand they must now offer the positions to those of *european nationalities* - excluding those from the UK - which sounds odd to me, although doesn't affect me.

From what I understand the positions I was after, that of Client Services Manager or Infrastructure Manager in their IT Dept. would or might only be offered to me if they cannot find suitable candidates or those prepared to accept the salary package.

In that respect there is some hope as the package is probably good for an australian but perhaps not so great for Europeans.

It is a real shame as I was quite keen to have a go out there for a few years.

Cheers and good luck to yourself.

Hi rockwallaby,

After 6 weeks of work at the hospital, my impression so far is that it is and will be a great place to work. The staff are friendly, the facilities (although all of which are not plugged in yet!) are excellent and the hospital will be a world class facility once it opens next year. I cannot speak about the workings of the IT department as I don't work in that area, only to say that the guys that are working there now are very professional and always very helpful.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi Andcat,

Cheers for the update. I had the impression the people in Sydney were being up front but at the same time I have wondered if I should just forget about this application and move on. I was told there was more work to be done in HR - so it sounds as though I should be patient.

Do you mind me asking what your impression of the hospital and the working environment? Bear in mind I have applied for a one of the senior IT positions and that Dept. may operate differently to other departments.

Cheers

Hi

your recruiting agent in australia is not spinning you any crap. he is absolutely correct in saying that there is a nationality quota at the hospital. i know this because i am australian and i work there.

my impression is (from hr) that once we fill up more roles with more european nationalities, it will allow more australians to be employed. there are ceilings on all nationalities and the ceiling is currently full on british, australian and nz candidates.

i am sure your agent will keep you well informed.

I am not sure, but I dont think you need to worry, such quotas are usually made for us (poor people coming from third world countries)....westrnes are always welcomed in this country for any position and at any time, they consider their existance a sign of modernisation and progress.....wish you all the best...
