Beach Clubs
My husband (British) moved to Doha 1 week ago and on Friday he wanted to spend the day by the beach, or at least a poole but had no luck. The marriott would only admit members! Are all the beach clubs the same? Is there anything at the Rugby Club? Any suggestions as with Ramadam he has not had the opportunity to 'meet a mate for a pint'. Any suggestions welcome - i'm feeling guilty sat here at home in England with my bottle of wine....

Cheers
Just wanted to say a big thank you for your Saturday night. Mike said you were lovely friendly people and it was so thoughtful for you to invite him. I hope to arrive in Doha 2nd Nov (it's my birthday 3rd!!) and would love to meet up with you. By the way Mike said your son was a very pleasant boy. Looking forward to meeting you, we are on a count down here...
Mike rang but we were out and our son answered the phone. Tell Mike, please excuse him, he is 14 with limited social skills (unfortunately its nothing that modern medicine can cure its called being a teenager - think of Kevin the teenager - thats our son). Tell Mike to try again tomorrow I am in most of the day and definately the evening.
It would be lovely if he could join us on Sat. Tell him dinner will be around 630. (Everything starts earlier over here) We live at Al Waab Gdns 2 (off the Salwa Road). It is a new compound so our road is not even on the map yet but I will give him directions. Its funny, back in England I would never have done this in a million years but becoming an expat gives you a whole new perspective on life and people.
Sorry his name is Mike
Thanks for the info I will give your number to Mike and I am sure he will contact you.
Thanks
It is so kind of you to invite my husband and I am sure he would love to join you all. I think he is getting lonely as he's even listening to me chatting on the phone for hours on a night. I will pass on your telephone number and once again, many thanks for your hospitality - I am sure we can repay the favour when I arrive in November.
There are in fact options, think clubs and special interest groups. Have your husband give me a call. Also, a good way to meet people here.
Chrissy having asked around it seems the alcoholic well is dry until end of R. Your poor husband. Would your husband like to come to our place for dinner on saturday evening. We are having another friend over who is also waiting for his family to join him. Tell we live in a compound not far from Doha college, that will give him an idea of geographics in case he is way over the other side, but taxis are quite cheap here anyway. If he fancies it tell him to ring Ren on 413 4733. Evenings are best after 8. Whats his name?
There are two options that I am sure about. The first is the Oasis Beach Club. Costs 60QR and has a nice beach area and a really good pool. The downside is that all the pool furniture is dirty and/or broken. The Oasis is being pulled down soon so they are not going to replace the crappy furniture. However, your husband does not need to be a member and the snack bar is open even during Ramamdan.
The other option is Sealine Resort (about 45 mins drive south of Doha). This is really nice and good value at 50QR. Its great for everyone, singles, couples and kids. I would suggest that your husband goes there for the day as it is relaxing and really nice. Go there myself every week.
On the alcohol front, there is an option for your husband. Suggest that he calls me on 5949577.
Rugby club has a crappy little pool that isnt of much use, and plus the RC is pretty dead with no alchohol.
Sheraton Hotel have great facilities and i think you can pay and go in...not sure if you need a member to do it though.
However Garvys, i know for sure, allow people in, i think for like 20qr, they have a decent pool , its more of a family place
The booze isn't the problem! But where can you go on a Friday without being a member?
What is the Rugby Club like? Is there any hotels you can pay to use facilities for a day?
he will have to wait another 3 weeks to get his fix for the booze i am afraid :-)
