where to live and how much

Hi,

I have read a few threads about the cost of accommodation and while all valuable I am trying to pull some of this together so I can make some valued decisions on whether to accept an offer to work in Qatar.

My question to people with families already in Doha is

(1) What are the areas ( suburbs ) you would suggest living?
(2) What is the advantage or nice things about those areas?
(3) How much for a 3 bedroom house [ we are 2 adults and 2 kids ] in those areas?

Reading all the posts I am getting the picture that the "living allowance" that is to be offered to me will be the key. From what I read the cost of accommodation is becoming very expensive.

I hear what you are saying. I have since found that the company owns a number of compounds and we would be put in one of those. From what I understand, unless we wish to move to a higher standard our accommodation it will be fully paid for with the allowance. That sounds ok - as long as the accommodation is good enough. Unfortunately I have no idea where these compounds are or any details about them.

This talk about school run traffic has me a bit concerned but I guess we will have to take each step at a time. Perhaps when I have a location identified you could be kind enough to let me know what schools are closest. Of course I don't wish to choose a school merely by location but there are some practicalities that will come into play.

Thanks very much for your advice.

Novita's point is well made. School run traffic is a nightmare, so aim to live close. As for living allowance. I'd suggest 12,000 as a minimum starting point and that figure has been rising by the month over the last year. Everyone here waiting to see if things slow down post asian games but as you can tell from other posts, no-one is sure what'll happen. So if you're in a position to negotiate then to aim hirer than 12 would not be unreasonable

May i suggest you find the school first before you looking for a house?
