CBQ is one of the best banks and I have been dealing with them since last couple of years and they have never let me down.I deal mainly with the airport branch as they are located opposite to my office on the C Ring road. One of the ladies there,(Oneza Tel 4313823), is pretty well versed with the processes of the bank and manages to get things done quite efficiently.
I hope my comment helps you in making the right choice!
our experiences with HSBC in Indonesia and Malaysia weren't very good either.
However, my brother in law using HSBC Doha for over 5 yrs now. He works off shore, and he transferred his wages monthly to the UK via HSBC and never have any problems.
Its online service is superb it saves you from going to the branch. refer to this thread http://www.qatarliving.com/discussion/banking-in-qatar-09jun2006 customer service in CBQ is "relatively" better than other banks. Interest rate varies by bank and by service (vehicle loan, personal loan..etc).
Interest on Vehicle loans starts from 4% to 4.5% max.

Yes, avoid HSBC.

i would NOT recommend HSBC. they are extremely expensive (very high transaction charges
and very high fee structures), and their customer service has to be the worst i have ever
experienced with a bank. I was living in Brussels, and it took them over two
months to post a web-banking pin to me, which never did work.
In the end, i closed my account with them.
i would check out local banks, see what the restrictions are on moving funds
across borders (and fees), see if they'll let you hold multi-currency accounts if you
need them, see if they offer services in your preferred language (doing your banking
in a language you don't understand is a bugger).
also check out what they charge for day-to-day banking. For example, do they charge
you for atm withdrawals, for atm withdrawals from other banks, for over-the-counter
transactions, etc etc.
just stay away from HSBC!
I also recommend Commercial bank.
