Single mom of 4 yr old --- need advice on visa

Hello! I am a single mom from the U.S. with a 4 yr old child. I am told that it is difficult for single mothers to obtain the family visa for their children upon being offered a job. I have an opportunity to teach abroad in Doha and I'm getting nervous that I will not be able to bring my child with me.

I have sole legal and physical custody of my child, his father is on the birth certificate and all the legal documents in the U.S. are up-to-date.

Can someone point me in the right direction for accurate information? I've read so many conflicting rules and I'm not sure which is the most current and accurate information.

Thanks so much for your help!

Cheers!

She won't be granted a family visa automatically, by default. She will have to meet the authorities, it might take time, and so on... It definitely won't be done in a first couple of months. If she is lucky, she will get it in 3-4 months. No one can promise "day one", simply because again as I sais, she has to get her own RP first. There are different ways to finally get to the point of RP. She might be able to keep her baby with her in Qatar from the beginning (although very tricky and uncertain) - there are visa on arrival for US citizens, family visit visa, etc., but if we are talking about Residence Permit, she has to keep in mind 3-6 months, not any less.

Mandi, it's not about employers. I'd say if we can't do that, no one in Qatar can. She has to get her RP in the first place. Here yes, some employer can get it done in a couple of weeks, others take their full 3 months. Then she has to have at very least 3 months back statements (as per requirements - 6 months bank statements). Nowadays a Government doesn't entertain "right away" family RPs without all required documents in place. Plus her case is "special". It cannot be solved like any other case in few days (again, given that all the requirements are there).

QS, there are certain employers that will make it happen right away. I wouldn't even bother if they didn't promise day one.

oh, and in any case it's not gonna happen in a first few month, I'd say half a year.

it is difficult, but it is possible. You have to advantages. As a teacher, you can sponsor your family members (normally, it is next to impossible for the female to sponsor her family). Second, you are a US citizen, and as mentioned Mandi, it might help you a lot.

However, again, it is not a straight-forward process and will involve some extra work, either by your Company, or by yourself. Verify with them if they are willing to help. Otherwise, if you rely on your own abilities to get things done, it is also an option.

Thank you, Mandi, for your response---very clear and concise and super helpful! I feel like that gives me a better sense of how to approach my potential future employer and how to handle the subject of being a single mother. I'm glad to hear that it CAN be done!!

How come she is in family status she is single with a child. She will apply for it, if it will be approved then she can come .

If you start hearing any back-pedaling or tap-dancing from your employer, do not come. Make sure they know that anything less than full residency permits for both of you facilitated by the employer is a non-starter. Make sure you have "family status" designated. It will depend on where you are working and the level of your job. Good luck!

Please disregard the above. He is speaking about nationalities that cannot get visas on arrival and companies that will leave it to the employee to do all the necessary work. As an American, your case is different. But your employer MUST be willing to do all the work to bring you and your child and to obtain residency permits for the both of you. It can be done, it is done every day. IF your employer wants you enough to go through the hassle. High-level single-mother employees come to Qatar all the time with visa, housing and education already arranged by the sponsor.
