Red Bull's Flugtag event warms up in Qatar
The countdown is on for the 1st Red Bull Flugtag Qatar, this unique event that will be held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Al Thani Chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority.
Following the selection of 46 teams, attention will go now to the Museum of Islamic Art Park on the 1st of November for great shows by unique human-powered aircrafts.
The competition will be held in collaboration with Ford, as one of the main sponsors, Innovations Unlimited ME, the event management agency and Qatar Museums Authority and the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), as the host of the venue.
Qatar Living is the media sponsor of this event.
This unique event features exclusively human-powered aircrafts with creative designs that will try to fly without any engine.
The 46 candidates at the Red Bull Flugtag were selected among 135 teams who presented their sketches, whereby the choice was based on the creativity and uniqueness of the designs.
The selected teams will now work on building their aircrafts in order to compete and grab the crowd’s and the jury’s attention.
“Many teams have signed up and we are very excited to see the great such interest in the event,” said Markus Jordan, Managing Partner of Innovations Unlimited ME.
He added, “We are working very closely with the Red Bull team and the Qatar Museum Authority to create an amazing day at the MIA for all the participating teams and the Doha community. It’s going to be as much fun for the spectators as it will be for the contestants!”
The teams who gathered at the Renaissance Hotel – Doha on Saturday the 20th of July, attended a briefing about the competition rules. Teams will be evaluated upon 3 main factors: creativity of the craft, showmanship and flight distance.
Besides trying to fly as far as possible, Red Bull Flugtag participants will try to appeal to the jury by designing a unique flying machine. They will also have to perform an entertaining show for 60 seconds to impress both the crowd and the jury before taking off and landing in the water.
Paul Anderson, Ford Middle East’s Marketing director said: “We’re really excited to be supporting the very 1st Red Bull Flugtag in Qatar, and help participating teams take their flying dreams further. As usual, Ford will be integrated into the event, adding fun elements as we reach out and engage the youth with our latest technologies and models.”
Red Bull Flugtag makes everyone’s dream of flying come true in a funny and creative way.
To note that the first flying trial ever goes to the Arab inventor, Abbas Ibn Firnas who designed an aircraft that consists on a structure and large wings. He tried to fly it and succeeded for a short distance.
Who of the candidates from Qatar will bring back this major Arab achievement?
