2. It moves around you but you do not see it?
3. The more you take from it the bigger it gets?
4. Full of holes but it is capable of storing water?

Suli, Keep the paper strip straight infront of you and pick up the top right corner with your hands. Now, place that corner anywhere along the left edge. Make a fold and now you will be able to see a triangle made by the fold.

The area of the triangle will depend on the point on the left edge at which the top right corner was placed.

So, the question is, what is the minimum area of the triangle that can be formed.

zedadiah, That is not the right answer. It is not that simple. You need to think and apply pythagorus, similar triangles, quadratic equations and finally calculus..:)

Getting bored..so remembered an interesting problem. It goes like this..

Take a sheet of paper strip of 10 cm width whose length can be considered as infinite. Now, fold the paper forming a triangle such that the right corner of the rectangular sheet of paper sits anywhere on the left edge.

Question is: What is the minimum area of the triangle formed?

Note: Maximum area is infinity as the paper strip is infinitely long.

ok ok ... we get it... well... so 38% and 62% was the right answer when rounding

By Knight Returns• 11 Jun 2013 10:13
Knight Returns

OK, let me give you some hints..

Let the length of the full line be 100% so written as 1 in decimel. Let the smaller ratio be P and the bigger ratio will be then (1-P).

Now, based on the condition, (1-P)/1 = P/(1-P) this is the quad. equation.

simplifying it we get, 1-3*P+P*P = 0 which can be solved easily for two values. Taking the realistic value

P = (3-SQRT(5))/2

p = 0.381966011250105151...( this is an irrational number so this much accuracy is fine..:))

KR ,,, GRRRR

Yes you are right

but am not sure that we can use the 0.62 as it has a (-) signal

But the equation should be correct,, Right?

By Sulieman• 11 Jun 2013 09:42
Sulieman

X/Z = Y/X

Z = X + Y

X(X+Y) = Y/X

1 +(X/Y) = Y/X

Assume Y/X = M

1+ (1/M) = M

M^2 - M - 1 = 0

M = 1.62 , and M = -0.62

So Y = 1.62 X

By Knight Returns• 11 Jun 2013 09:35

Suli, your equation isn't correct. You have chosen Y to be the smaller part...so how can it be 1.62 times the bigger part.

By snakyy21• 11 Jun 2013 09:24

Dude.. let's try it one last ime.... you are saying

x/z=y/x ?

where x is large side, z the whole line and y is the smaller side ? pls confirm

By Knight Returns• 10 Jun 2013 12:16
Knight Returns

snakky, your math isn't correct! Try to cross check by calculating the two ratios. The value of the first ratio is 0.909 while the value of the second ratio is 0.1

I am afraid you are not able to convert percentage into decimel properly..

By snakyy21• 10 Jun 2013 12:02
snakyy21

if you want the reverse answer then it is approximately 62% vs 38% and the ratio would be approximately 0.61

By snakyy21• 10 Jun 2013 11:53
snakyy21

kr... this is just a typo.. the argument is valid though...

you end up with x2=zy ... so what i wrote earlier is right... just the first line was type.. sorry. so if z = 100%... then x=90.9 and y is 9.09%.. oops.. little marginal error.. yeah.. so the answer is

x=90.9 and y is 9.09%

and ration wise... 1 to 10 .. meaning larger line should be ten times larger than smaller line.

By Knight Returns• 10 Jun 2013 11:49
Knight Returns

Suli, your answer is close but its not accurate. This is a simple quadratic equation and the name of the problem is 'golden ratio' of a line.

I am sure if you form a quadratic equation and then solve it, you will get an accurate answer. Good try though!!

KR ,, I had a headache now

It is not working

but the closest answer was

but this is what i got :(

By Knight Returns• 10 Jun 2013 11:35

Snakky, Please read the question again!! The condition required as per your variables is x/z = y/x.

Your answer is not satisfying the condition of the question.

By snakyy21• 10 Jun 2013 11:20
snakyy21

Sorry KR... I know about it.. and that is the correct answer... you might be looking just for a different representation of the same solution.. this is very simple question .. if x is larger part .. y is smaller.. and z is the total length.. then x/z=x/y which is x2-zy... assuming z = 100% of line... x = 10 y... which is x = 91.91% and y = 9.09%... sorry.. the answer can not be incorrect

By Knight Returns• 10 Jun 2013 10:14
Knight Returns

Snakky21, The line definitely finite. You can actually find the solution of it by making and solving a quadratic equation. This isn't the right answer.

Once you come with an answer, you should cross check if the conditions are being satisfied.

By snakyy21• 10 Jun 2013 10:06
snakyy21

x=10y... where x is larger side and y is smaller...in other words smaller part should be 10 times smaller than the larger part... another representation is

90.91% vs 9.09%.

unless we assume that line is infinite.. then there is no solution...

any other questions ? :-)

By snakyy21• 10 Jun 2013 07:55

But sinece we are talking about fairness prior to them negotiating the outcome... the first bother who gets 0.5 of a camel is the largest beneficiary... and the last brother who gets -0.11 of the remaining is the least beneficiary.. considering first got most camels and last got least camels it is not a fair rounding... if we include negotiation then the first brother should give one of his camels to the last one... and say... here you go bro... at least you got 3 camels.. i still got 8 ;-)

By snakyy21• 10 Jun 2013 07:54
snakyy21

Dude... i dont think you are getting what I am saying:

17/2 = 8.5

17/3 = 5.67

17/9 = 1.89

If you round them up using a common sense... you end up with 9, 6 and 2.. and the sum is 17... you dont need a camell for that.

Now on the topic of fairness.... naturally if they agree on something it does not matter... even one brother can tell another take all my camels... i got enough wells... you dont owe me anything... Khalas

By Straight Arrow• 9 Jun 2013 15:21
Straight Arrow

and if all the brothers agree then it is fair, another point if you make rounding and sum it up will not reach the exact original number

and here is the proff:

17/2 + 17/3 + 17/9 does not equal 17

but

18/2 + 18/3 + 18/9 equals 17

By snakyy21• 9 Jun 2013 13:37
snakyy21

Dude..... you wrote exactly what I did... what is your point... what i said is

1. nobody needs an extra camel from the judge.. it is obvious how to divide camels if you just round up the numbers

2. While rounding you are benefiting the one who gets the largest rounding.. so it is by definition not a fair division.

Now what is your point ?

By Straight Arrow• 6 Jun 2013 14:55
Straight Arrow

is that 17 can not be divded by three without having a fraction, so the judge addid his camel to have 18 which can be divided by 3

The father already died and left the 17 camels for his sons, and the sons did not how they can divide the camels as per their father wishes.

17/2 = 8.5

17/3 = 5.67

17/9 = 1.89

Now = 1.89 + 5.67 + 8.5 = 16.07 so there is one camel left and I can say this is not fair

here what the judge did

17 camel + Judge camel = 18 camels

18/2= 9

18/3= 6

18/9= 2

Now let us see 2+6+9 = 17 and remaining camel took by the judge which obviously his camel.

By snakyy21• 6 Jun 2013 13:56
snakyy21

oh... and btw.... not all brothers benefited equally from rounding up... they guy who already got half... got the largest part of rounding up... which is unfair cause his starting share was already large

By snakyy21• 6 Jun 2013 13:55
snakyy21

SA... you just repeated my point... so what is your point ? Why do you need an extra camel ?

By Straight Arrow• 6 Jun 2013 13:48
Straight Arrow

In mathematics preliminary schools one of the lesson is how can you divide a number without having a fraction or remaining one or two numbers or more, so the teacher ask the students divde 13 by 2 for example, the students must add 1 so it becomes 13+1 = 14, and 14/2 = 7

By shady till i die• 6 Jun 2013 13:45
shady till i die

SA in a sense i was right but i was also little bit confuse with equally so i said 6 to each otherwise could have done the mathematics too.

By snakyy21• 6 Jun 2013 13:41
snakyy21

SA, your answer is actually incorrect:

1. You said equally... should have said fairly as per father will

2. Even if you did follow father's will... it is still incorrect.. Here is how it should have been:

1 bro 1/2 - 8.50 camels

2 bro 1/3 - 5.67 camel

3 bro 1/9 - 1.89

It all adds up to 16.05... the rest of the camel should have been given to poor people - 0.95 camel. Alternatively brothers could agree on gifting or buying additional shares. Alternatively if you round up all the figures with the remainder of the camels you get 9, 6 and 2... so no need for judge's camel

The bottom line: Most likely his father did not understand that the total of his wealth should be eqaul to 100%.

By Straight Arrow• 6 Jun 2013 13:38
Straight Arrow

my friend Osama, I think the question should be what did the judge do to distribute the camels according to their father wish.

17/2 = 8.5 camel !! how can some one take 8 camels and half a camel, so the judge avoided this by adding his camel and now it became 18, and 18/2 = 9, can you buy a dog and half a dog for your house for example? Yes if the dog is dead.

By osamabawab• 6 Jun 2013 13:22
osamabawab

but the question was:

what the judge do to divide the camels equally?

and that doesn't seem to be "equally"!

By Straight Arrow• 6 Jun 2013 13:01
Straight Arrow

The judge put his camel with their camels = 17+1 = 18

the first takes half = 18/2 = 9 camels

the second takes one thirs = 18/3 = 6 camels

the third sone take ninth = 18/9 = 2 camels

so now we have 9 + 6 + 2 = 17 camels, and the remaining one the judge took it and left the sons.
