Why the sudden glut of Qatar rumours?
Qatar is famous for its vast oil reserves, winning the right to host the 2022 World Cup and being infuriatingly discreet about its investment plans – but it is suddenly attracting all sorts of attention.
Two weeks ago there was speculation that Qatar was about to make a bid for Arsenal, which was followed last week by a Financial Times piece about the emirate having a £10bn infrastructure fund to invest in the UK.
Then came reports in the Times that Qatar was about to launch the "Dream Football League", supposedly to challenge UEFA's Champions League, before the weekend's suggestions that the sovereign wealth fund was looking at bidding £8bn for our embattled retailer Marks & Spencer.
Why the sudden glut of Qatar rumours?

@Brit
Exactly...when u wanna start off u don't need the competition it's hard enough to start from scratch as it is. Paris is one of the most famous cities on earth, and it's team does not befit with the status of the city itself. Their team has never amounted to much for as far back as I can remember...succeeding with PSG will increase the trust in future Qatari investments and will raise the level of acceptability among fans.
Barcelona was a different story...I personally believe that it's currently the most famous football squad on earth....amongs lovers AND haters alike!!! Attaching anything that has the word QATAR so visibly on it increases the visibility and publicity of Qatar TREMENDOUSLY....especially since Qatar is the first sponsor in the history of that club...mind u startin next season their shirts will start reading "Qatar Airways" so Double Whammy for Qatar!!!! of course that's impressive on any resume.
Qatar did the right thing by acquiring PSG and sponsoring Barcelona.
There is no logic in going up against the likes of Abu Dhabi and Abrahmovich in the EPL.. The costs would have been horrendous and the positive publicity returns probably negligible..
@Ben_130
Ummmmm, don’t wanna point out the obvious but isn’t Barcelona sponsored largely by Qatar??? Isn’t Malaga owned by Qatar??? Hello? :-P
Welllllll the rumors r normal and expected to me....we have a famous quote in Arabic that goes "Only a fruitful tree gets casted with stones"....Qatar though far from being "there" is definitely changing for the better and in a short time it was able to reach at least in some areas a very high standard and make a good name for itself especially considering it's small size...it's normal that some will try to ride the glory waves by attaching everything to Qatar...and it's also normal for others to try to pull it down and belittle what it does cuz it's startin to make them look bad....at the end of the day, know that u must be ahead in the race if someone is tryin to tug on ur shirt from behind.
In terms of sport I've always wondered why there isn't much Qatari investment apart from PSG, but they play in a sh*t league. I'm surprised they have not tried to go down the Man City route with another English team.
Whoever made up the 'dream' football league idea needs a slap. That would ruin football once and for all. Against modern football!
ie. child kidnapping from City Center, a bomb was planted in city Center, etc etc
There are rumours that Qatar is going to buy M&S plus invest another 10 billion in infrastructure projects in partnership with the government.
The key issue here is "Who" is initiating these rumours. As they say , any publicity is good publicity and Qatar has a great PR machine.
The Dream League Football was a spoof started in France which the Times swallowed whole. Nothing like checking sources and facts..... twits.
I bet that'll p i s s off a whole of people who think they are more worthy of Qatari Passports;-p
the next time we know its already "GREAT BRITAIN QATAR"
:-) :-) :-)
tb LOL
Qatar is buying so much of the UK, it won't be much longer and all Brits will become Qatari citizens by default as they will have bought the whole lot including us.
