Karwa taxi meter

By speedmarks

I noticed this afternoon that the driver of the Karwa taxi I was riding did not start his meter while I was on my way to work. Asking him why the taxi meter is off, he told me that it is upon me how much I would like to pay him. Is this arrangement acceptable for Karwa company and am I supposed to pay him even if he didn't put on his taxi meter? Kindly advice.

What can we do with reckless karwa drivers who put our lives at risk?

Biju, I agree with you that we as expats are here in Qatar to earn money to support our family's needs. But would it be nice to earn money decently? I cannot see the logic of putting off the taxi meter because they are paid with low salaries. I cant even imagine these guys buying food from the money that was really intended as taxi meter sales for Karwa company and then putting it at their family's dining table? Well, I am willing to pay extra tip to a taxi driver who is honest and trust worthy enough not only to his passengers but to his company as well. In Qatar, money is easily earned but not the dignity and respect that we seldom seek especially at work.

You dont know how taxi drivers are working they are not working for salary, they have to pay daily rent to Karwa and to get their target they have to work hard from early morning to midnight, karwa staffs are suffering so many problems there but no one care if any one asks they will send him to jail, (in human behaviours) if you got any advantage in taxi fare (I mean may be you pay less than the meter fare why you are worried?) then how they can work with them sincerly??

Thanks for the info guys. I believe the one I rode was a regular taxi since I hailed him at Matar Qadeem signal and I was riding alone without anybody with the same destination as mine. I hope Karwa would be helpful enough to place informative stickers infront of the dashboard. The taxi number and their help line numbers would be a great if their passengers could see it right away. We can report cheating and reckless taxi drivers on the road.

This is cheating. You should get paid what you earned. Driving a taxi without turning on the meter is dishonesty. I would politely asked him to turn on the meter and remind him if you do next time I will report to Karwa. He may not do it again.

I saw a sign inside a taxi once that said if the driver of the vehicle doesn't run the meter, then the ride is free of charge!

Ask him for a bill, tell him if i dont show the bill to the company they will not reimburse me. If still he did not gave the bill, do complain in Karwa and ask for complain number.

you could report him to their management, call 4588888. It is not acceptable. They should use the meter all the time, by not doing so, they're trying to earn extra money for themselves.

There are 3 types of karwa taxi fleets plying the roads of Doha:

1, Call center fleet - these are pre-booked via their call center number 458-8888.

2. Regular taxi fleet (driver wears Blue ID tag)- those that have stations/terminals in malls and other strategic locations around Doha. These taxis go by the meter.

3. Boundary taxi fleet (driver wears RED ID tag)- these drivers are on quota of QAR240 per day to be turned over at the end of their shift. These drivers sometimes doesn't use the meter and sometimes would get passengers to fill up the taxi seats and charge per head (provided that all passengers are in the same route)

Hope this info helps...

Its not acceptable to the Karwa Management....that driver might be interested to put that money into his pocket. Turning the meter ON is a must.
