Does QA pay well ???

does QA pay well for an IT professional (datawarehouse) with 5years of exp ? Also, one of my friends is asked to join QA on contract base is this a good option ? Is there any chance of him being absorbed by QA if his performance is good or will this be a extended for some undecided period ????
