Jail term, fines up to QR100,000 ‘for hiring absconders’
A person who gives shelter to absconding workers or employs him or her, is liable for imprisonment and payment of a fine ranging from QR20,000 to  QR100,000, an Interior Ministry official has said.
Officials of the Ministry of Interior were participating in the Ramadan tents held at Dukhan and Rayyan, to interact with the public on daily problems such as absconding workers, traffic congestion, reckless driving; besides charges levied by the employment agencies for recruiting domestic servants,  says a report published in a local Arabic daily.
Responding to a question on absconding labourers, the director of the department of investigation and follow-up, Col Nasser Esa al-Sayed explained at the Ramadan tent held in Rayyan that the ministry on its part, is doing its best to check this problem.
He said: “We implement the law which stipulates that a person who gives shelter to absconding workers or employs him or her is liable for imprisonment and payment of a sum ranging from QR20,000 to  QR100,000 as fine.
“If an absconding domestic servant on a personal sponsorship is arrested or surrenders voluntarily within 30 days from the date of the filing of the first information report (FIR) by the sponsor, he (the sponsor) has to bear the cost of air ticket to deport the person to his or her native country. But if the person is arrested after 30 days, the matter becomes sub judice and is referred to the public prosecutor for instituting legal procedures.”
Answering  a question whether it is permissible to recruit more than one domestic servant, the assistant director of immigration and passports, Brig Mohamed Ahmed al-Ateeq said that visas are normally issued for only one domestic servant and two domestic car drivers.
These visas are issued after ascertaining the ability of the sponsor to maintain these servants and pay their wages regularly.
He also referred to the announcement already made last week, regarding the permission to recruit domestic servants from a new list of countries.
On the question of persuading the recruiting agencies to reduce their charges, the manager of Monaco recruiting firm, Hisham Noor said the charges are high for reasons beyond their control. The authorities in some of the countries have introduced high fees besides some other difficult procedures.
