Incomprehensible Posts-Pet Peeve

Gumby
By Gumby

Right, I' m going to air a pet-peeve of mine just to see if I'm the only one who feels this way.

Am I the only person who finds many posts incomprehensible due to the use of "text speak", unexplained jargon and abbreviations, and generally poor structure?

Seems to me that since many (the majority?) of the users on here speak English as a second language, shouldn't we be making an effort to make our posts as clear and easily understood as possible?

Opinions, feedback?

If it was between Tigasin and Charan, I'd have said it was all tongue-in-cheek.

But I don't know you guys that well.  You both seem so nice and polite!

By the way, Vietnamese is my native language, and English is my second, but aparently I can't speak Vietnamese properly anymore! :-(

So true, OrangKedah.  dd (darling daughter) speaks Korean and English as her "first" language.  I've heard Korean Christians say they pray in English (which is a very personal thing so it must use the important "heart" language).  But yet their "first" language is Korean.

The definiton of a "native speaker" is changing as English becomes more global.  Who, now, is a native speaker?

"Net lang" is a dialet no different from any other dialect, be it Singlish or chaque.  It is perfectly acceptable within its group and should even be celebrated for diversity and originality, but it is an impediment when working with an outgroup.

onomatopaic word = word that when you say it - it acutally sounds like the action:

bang

crash

clatter

thud

The most onomatopaic language I know is Mayan and believe me some of the words are so funny......

Thank you Oryx, but more importantly, can we find anyone to absolve Zyga of her fashion crimes?  How would that work?  Would she prostrate herself before Giorgio Armani and say "Forgive me, for I have sinned against fashion."

Thank you but perhaps you may be in better need than I.

Actualy I think I need to back to commercial college and se if they can teach me to type again seems in this dottery old age of mine I can't hit the keys properly any more.

Needless to say many of on QL speak two or more languages which often leads to confusion in grammer and such like, but I admire all on QL who manage to put a coherent sentence together in English many not having been taught English in School but have accustomed their ears and write accordingly.

I do like to joke now and again about some written English but when the day's done I respect them all for trying. !!!

I really hope that what I have written thus far is comprehensible. Honestly,  I have never fully understood the terms "second language" and "native speaker".

I speak three languages fluently. English comes as naturally to me as the other two languages. As a matter of fact, it is the first language I use in my daily conversations and on most official business.  However, I do not come from a country that officially recognises English as it's official language. The closest we come to links with the English language is from our colonial past and due to the fact that we are members of the Commonwealth.  Therefore, politically I may not come within the definition of a "native speaker".

And as I have mentioned, I speak three languages. Which is the first, second or third is anybody's guess as I am at ease with all three.  I spent five years of my life in England pursuing my studies. I couldn't have possibly graduated from one of the leading engineering universities in England by answering questions in my "second language" as it were, could I? I have also have a degree in law from a top British university. And believe me, I couldn't have passed all my exams at first sitting unless English is understood as if it were my "first language".

Zyga,

How I've missed you!  What's new?  A shame that you can't sit here and chat with the rest of us, but have to...oh, what's that word again?  People do it in offices... WORK! That's it.  How's work?

Well Canarybird, shall I send you over a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary-or Webster's, your choice- and the latest version of "Grammar for the Busy Person'?

Though I do like the idea of a chastising club...What do you think, could we all get together once a week and criticize each other for our failings and perceived short-comings.  It would be very comfortable, sort of like living with my ex-fiance again...

Let's examine this, on another post we have the most ghastly piece of poetry whos' owner wins prizes, and here we have many writers using their own interpretation of the English language.

Me I am jumping between doing my work and reading post, and  if I have time to post sometimes I misspell words and slap my fingers afterwards for the mistakes.

So let make a club here and chastise ourselves for not writing english in a proper coherent manner - I plead guilty - BUT English is my mother tongue tsk tsk tsk oh my oh my canarybird what have you reduced yourself to?????  lol lol lol

Oh sorry Gumby, I was being totally tongue-in-cheek.  I was not being sarcastic.  Apologies that it was read that way.  I should have put in a few smilies and exclamation marks

Diamond girl-You misinterpet my post-your sarcasm is uncalled for.

I am not an example for anyone, nor have I tried to portray myself as such. I have not said that I expect a formal style or writing from anyone, nor have I made any derogatory comment on anyone's writing style.

I applaud people for writing in a language that is not their own, it is something I can not do and would not criticize someone for doing it.  However, making mistakes is a different idea than knowingly choosing to use "text speak" and other tools that make posts that much harder to be understood.

What I have said is that this is a post for all, and should be written for all.
