Incomprehensible Posts-Pet Peeve
Right, I' m going to air a pet-peeve of mine just to see if I'm the only one who feels this way.
Am I the only person who finds many posts incomprehensible due to the use of "text speak", unexplained jargon and abbreviations, and generally poor structure?
Seems to me that since many (the majority?) of the users on here speak English as a second language, shouldn't we be making an effort to make our posts as clear and easily understood as possible?
Opinions, feedback?
Better make that an economy size can of whoop-ass. You'll need it! ;-)
i am so going to whoop your azz from here to kingdom come ......capisce?
esp since i am in peak physical condition from all the work outs i do .............
Yes, hope that others didn't take it seriously-it was all in fun -other than Zyga's fashion crimes of course. THAT is nothing to joke about.
hi smellyindiancully.. long time..
Everybody is right everybody is wrong it depends where you stand.

i was just thinking the same. Gumby was talking about the use "text speak". Why are
people talking about spelling mistakes????????????????
its tongue in cheek.......although sometimes i could knock his block off......esp since I m in peak physical condition and he is just a wannabe- mountie or in that sweater a racooon...........
He was refering to incomprehensible posts, not odd spelling mistakes and typos. Duh!
My pet peeve is people not reading threads properly and jumping to comclusions! ROFLMAO
we don't have to apologize..by talking like this is not a sin..or hurting people..why we have to apologize?
hmmmmmmmmmmm this frenchy

Everybody is right everybody is wrong it depends where you stand.
Well I am a native English speaker and your posts are much better stated than mine.
If it was between Tigasin and Charan, I'd have said it was all tongue-in-cheek.
But I don't know you guys that well. You both seem so nice and polite!
By the way, Vietnamese is my native language, and English is my second, but aparently I can't speak Vietnamese properly anymore! :-(
People like me (in PEAK physical condition) like to also show off our mental prowess by engaging in l33t speak from time to time.....
Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it! LOL
Stay safe all.
Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?
Weeeell as we Scottish would put it and as I have often heard quoted 'up your kilt' if you know how to write wot and den are not even int he dictionary so why use it if you know better?????
Now you know as well as I do , that fashion crimes are up your neck of the woods... short tight grey dead thing vaguely resembling a jumper was the order of the day for you a few days ago if i recall correctly.............
And im a native of said country........

So true, OrangKedah. dd (darling daughter) speaks Korean and English as her "first" language. I've heard Korean Christians say they pray in English (which is a very personal thing so it must use the important "heart" language). But yet their "first" language is Korean.
The definiton of a "native speaker" is changing as English becomes more global. Who, now, is a native speaker?
Thanks Oryx... What abt Oops? What word is that?

"Net lang" is a dialet no different from any other dialect, be it Singlish or chaque. It is perfectly acceptable within its group and should even be celebrated for diversity and originality, but it is an impediment when working with an outgroup.
He cuts down trees. He skips and jumps.
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around in bars?!
He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.
onomatopaic word = word that when you say it - it acutally sounds like the action:
bang
crash
clatter
thud
The most onomatopaic language I know is Mayan and believe me some of the words are so funny......
Whts the big deal , if ppl do use txt language out here it makes replying to threads like this much simpler
Hey, don't you be making fun of my national dress!
What do you suggest?
A checked shirt and a dead racoon on his head?
Does onomatopic mean colloquial?
Sorry i am not a native english speaker

Thank you Oryx, but more importantly, can we find anyone to absolve Zyga of her fashion crimes? How would that work? Would she prostrate herself before Giorgio Armani and say "Forgive me, for I have sinned against fashion."
Slurp is an onomatopaic word...
perfectly fine..
gumby absolved
The only sins I've seen recently have to do with those orange polysester flared trousers you were wearing with that pink frilly blouse at Paul the other day. And you wonder why I didn't stop by your table to say hello...
did i committ a cardinal sin..........oh gumby chief of police..
Now there's an image. Make sure you wear a bib, I've heard what happens when you slurp soup.
I barely earn enough to feed myself - why would I give you a birthday present, rather you pass the hat around for my birthday so I can invest in a new typing course lol lol
u obviously have too much time on your hand. I m just a desk jockey slurping on my soup.........
Alexa is bang on. I didn't think this would be such a touchy subject.
Canarybird-I'm more of a "Grammar for Dummmies" kind of guy. Though if you would like to give me a full set of the OED on DVD, my birthday is coming up.
As we have talked about keyboarding skills so much, perhaps I'll start a new post.'
"Keyboarding is the most useful skill I learned in school." Agree or disagree.
If there is, I have not yet found it. That could be part of the problem (I will blame my poor writing on that fact)
Thank you but perhaps you may be in better need than I.
Actualy I think I need to back to commercial college and se if they can teach me to type again seems in this dottery old age of mine I can't hit the keys properly any more.
Needless to say many of on QL speak two or more languages which often leads to confusion in grammer and such like, but I admire all on QL who manage to put a coherent sentence together in English many not having been taught English in School but have accustomed their ears and write accordingly.
I do like to joke now and again about some written English but when the day's done I respect them all for trying. !!!
I really hope that what I have written thus far is comprehensible. Honestly, I have never fully understood the terms "second language" and "native speaker".
I speak three languages fluently. English comes as naturally to me as the other two languages. As a matter of fact, it is the first language I use in my daily conversations and on most official business. However, I do not come from a country that officially recognises English as it's official language. The closest we come to links with the English language is from our colonial past and due to the fact that we are members of the Commonwealth. Therefore, politically I may not come within the definition of a "native speaker".
And as I have mentioned, I speak three languages. Which is the first, second or third is anybody's guess as I am at ease with all three. I spent five years of my life in England pursuing my studies. I couldn't have possibly graduated from one of the leading engineering universities in England by answering questions in my "second language" as it were, could I? I have also have a degree in law from a top British university. And believe me, I couldn't have passed all my exams at first sitting unless English is understood as if it were my "first language".
Zyga,
How I've missed you! What's new? A shame that you can't sit here and chat with the rest of us, but have to...oh, what's that word again? People do it in offices... WORK! That's it. How's work?
Well Canarybird, shall I send you over a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary-or Webster's, your choice- and the latest version of "Grammar for the Busy Person'?
Though I do like the idea of a chastising club...What do you think, could we all get together once a week and criticize each other for our failings and perceived short-comings. It would be very comfortable, sort of like living with my ex-fiance again...
woke up on the wrong side of his bed this morning?;-P
Good morning, Gumby ;-P

get a life......
Let's examine this, on another post we have the most ghastly piece of poetry whos' owner wins prizes, and here we have many writers using their own interpretation of the English language.
Me I am jumping between doing my work and reading post, and if I have time to post sometimes I misspell words and slap my fingers afterwards for the mistakes.
So let make a club here and chastise ourselves for not writing english in a proper coherent manner - I plead guilty - BUT English is my mother tongue tsk tsk tsk oh my oh my canarybird what have you reduced yourself to????? lol lol lol
Note to self - use more smileys.

Diamondgirl- Not a problem at all. Lack of tone, one of the hazards of the written word I guess. What would we do without smileys?
Oh sorry Gumby, I was being totally tongue-in-cheek. I was not being sarcastic. Apologies that it was read that way. I should have put in a few smilies and exclamation marks

Diamond girl-You misinterpet my post-your sarcasm is uncalled for.
I am not an example for anyone, nor have I tried to portray myself as such. I have not said that I expect a formal style or writing from anyone, nor have I made any derogatory comment on anyone's writing style.
I applaud people for writing in a language that is not their own, it is something I can not do and would not criticize someone for doing it. However, making mistakes is a different idea than knowingly choosing to use "text speak" and other tools that make posts that much harder to be understood.
What I have said is that this is a post for all, and should be written for all.

agree 100%. But it is not only by those for whom English is a second language....

Veni, Vici, viva.
Yes, I really do expect much more from you Gumby to help us poor non-native English speakers have better command of the language. Shame on you. Please do better.
