Engineers Vs Tea boy

smoke
By smoke

Funny thing happened at work today, a engineer brought his personal laptop to me this morning to be formatted and a while later my tea boy brings in his pc to be formatted too! So here i am sitting in office formatting two computers. At the end of the day, the engineer takes his laptop and walks away, while the tea boy tries to put 50 RIYALS in my pocket. Of course i refused to accept his money being a generous kitty kat and always willing to help people esp. those that bring me my coffee in the mornings spit free :p

So out of this whole episode i've come to this conclusion: My tea boy seems to be doing better off than that engineer who takes home a hefty salary, while my tea boy might be getting somewhere along the lines of 1000 to 1200 bucks pm...or did i get the moral of this story wrong?

I can imagine how international experience can be very challenging and may be the total opposite of what one is accustomed to back home. I'm sure all will go well, you seem to be in good control.

Keep up the good work.

As you know, I struggled with the language and culture stuff inspite of living abroad for years.

It's a tough one. There is so much to take into account.

Language, culture, religion and home stuff.

For me, if you are able to work you have to work.

I have women working for me and if they need time off because their kid is sick, that's fine; actually ditto for the men. As a team we will cover.

All of that is fine, but some people have to understand if you have a job you work for it.

I'm learning a great deal from you too.

I heard a couple of organizations are stumbling here, despite the large allocated budget. I believe their planning was very poor. Having no consideration of the environment and language barrier are two more crucial elements causing the shut down or delay of projects. The worst of all is to have no risk mitigation study conducted or contingency plan in place!

I hope you'll pull it all together and will be rewarded for that too..:)

Feel free to disagree at any time with me. I can take it and I could actually learn from it. So don't hold back.

Saving a ship is always hard. Sometimes though we have to make harsh choices. If you let people know first that hard choices are going to be made, it is up to them to either pull themselves up or carry on and call the managers bluff; with them hoping they are safe because they have worked at the same place for years and consider themselves safe.

Hell, nobodys job is safe over here. As I said, I was given hell in a basket. Trying to make a silk purse out off a sows ear. I really can't afford to support deadwood.

I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!

By Happy Happy• 21 May 2009 20:44
Happy Happy

I wouldn't dare to disagree with you, I was just thinking that hiring a replacement isn’t exactly my idea of saving the ship, familiarization time or OJT needed may devour the rest of the "borrowed time" not the best of choices either. But you must be very good at risk management then, great!

Best of luck.

I have to be harsh. If somebody does not do their job it reflects badly on us all. The book has to stop somewhere. Of course you have to support and encourage; but some people don't just get that.

I took over a sinking ship and it was hell on earth. Got a long way to go. I do treat all the same, if they do well, I appreciate that and I tell them so. To put it bluntly if they fuck up, I tell them so.

Two things happen usually, the person that was praised and rewarded tries even harder, the person that messed up, usually does 2 things, he either tries harder or he/she does not care and again fails.

There are lots of people out there looking for jobs who are just as qualified, in fact some are more qualified. In the current economic climate, people should be working harder not slacking.

I am trying to finish a project that is delayed as it is. I need a good loyal team, I can't afford slackers. It was the people that were lazy and not managed that got us in this mess.

I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!

By Happy Happy• 21 May 2009 12:34

Well, it's all tied up to your firm's regular employee performance evaluation and self-assessment reviews. Decisions to fire, hire or reward staff shouldn’t be whimsical or mood-dependent. There must be standards in place.

I'm an advocate of management's annual evaluation programs by their employees, that's the proper time to get even..:)

I thought that was rather harsh attitude. I have a rule for slackers at work, three warnings, on the third “you let go automatically”. It never happened in my team to have to fire someone though. (One of the most aching decisions one has to take against a team member).

to me it is just plain stupid not to include the whole team.

Don't get me wrong though...if somebody pisses me off, they piss me off. I am harsh. I take no prisoners. I treat all well, but if anybody takes the piss, and before you all comment, that includes Westerners....I will get rid.

I need a good team around me. If they are not up to scratch they go.

I have a dead line and my job is on the line too.

The first time all i did was put in the username and password and made it secure, he asked me how much i said, its ok no big deal. Second time yesterday he called me as he was having trouble again, it was a minor thing, this time he never offered me any money instead he gave me two BIG freaking boxes of arabic sweets...YUMMMMMMM!! I went home a happy kitty :P

Onemakikomoto..

don't say weird man :)

if you are put in his position..you would become mentally disturbed believe me..

I don't know how they manage to stand it psycologically..We really have Evil people around who care NOT about those tea boys..

Imagine sitting in the kitchen all day with no pc but glasses and kettles and the rest of it...

When I enter the kitchen, the tea boy is either sleeping, or reading outdated newspapers or playing with cell fone (which i am sure running out of credit)

Sponsoring companies pay them less than they deserve..alot less...

This may not be related to topic but i thought i would say it anyway

By anonymous• 18 May 2009 21:50

I know what you mean by that. I drink Earl Grey tea. I have shown our tea boy, (or 'refreshment person' as our new PC Head says we have to call him) a million times how to make it. He insisted on adding sugar and milk. I do it myself now, as I would have to do anyway back home, so no problem really.

Their are some people who are really thoughtful and appreciative on the efforts of other especially when they asked favors from you.. Giving some amount or not, that's still thoughtful as long as they say the small word with a big meaning.... it's "THANK YOU".. DId that engineer says that word to you? or not at all? I hope he did... On the otherhand, Maybe, the Engineer thinks that fixing the Laptop is for company's good assuming that, that laptop is company provided to him(I assumed)... If not, if its personal, then shame on him...( You just mentioned ( HIS LAPTOP, so its quite vague)....

and also, always remember that " It's better to give than to Receive.. Your effort was being appreciated by people here.. and its good.. at least , good people exist...

you did the right thing. What is to say a group of men did not club together to buy the lap top for them all to use in the camp. I think the engineer just presumed you would repair it as you do work in IT. The tea boy knew you were doing him a favour hence the offer of a tip.

You could have actually refused to do both, however out of your kindess and love of the job you helped. The tea boy was very grateful that is obvious and shows he has morals.

Sorry yano i only format pc's for tea boyz and engineers, your job title says Manager :p

CuriousButDetermined, yes i'm in the IT department for technical support, but that doesnt mean i have to render support for their own home personal laptops or computers, i do it out of my own free will towards my colleagues, coz i like and want to help them.

My issue here is about how they think they can get free work done for their personal gain through the office rather than spend 30 riyals and get it done outside at a repair shop. I can understand the tea boys dont own a car so they have to make special trip to the shop to give it for repairs and then again to collect it, plus service charges etc, but these guys just take advantage of the fact that they can get it done for free :p

Alexa, my tea boy brought his desktop pc not laptop :p But now a days laptops seem to be getting cheaper i wont be surprised if they do get a laptop soon.

Ok seriously getting to the point of the matter is why cant these people take their laptops to the shops or companies to get them repaired? Its nice to think they will get it done free of charge at office. I'm more than happy to help out the poor tea boys with this coz i know the shops charge anywhere between 20 to 40 bucks just to format a pc, which should be dirt cheap for these engineers.
