Emirati US$12,000 in fines in 5 minutes

An Emirati man has racked up AED45,000 (US$12,251) worth of speeding fines in just five minutes driving down Sheikh Zayed Road.

Dubai traffic police impounded the unidentified man’s car for 360 days after speeding through 12 cameras along Dubai’s main highway, according to Arabic daily Al Ittihad.

The report follows weeks after Dubai's transport authority said it was planning to review speed limits on all roads over the next two years in a bid to improve safety.

Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the Licensing Agency, part of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said speed limits would be assessed and revised if necessary.

“The RTA has chalked out a time frame over the next two years for assessing the maximum speed signs fixed all over roads and streets of Dubai Emirate including revising them, if needed,” he said.

The number of fatalities on Dubai’s roads has declined from 21.7 cases per 100,000 people in 2007 to 6.7 cases per 100,000 last year.

That's interesting. One camera behind the other. Where else could the second camera be? It can't be in the same place as the first camera, or?

Dubai loves to make records........good or bad who cares!

It should also HIGHLIGHT about in last 4 years how many millions of USD guttered due to Real Estate market crash and how many expats put behind bars for defaulting in repaying bank debts and number of cases of run offs leaving cars at the Airport.....thats too a BIG record........Dubai is a crazy world.

Shaikh Zayed Road has camera at every 2 kms...(Minimum)...

Ignoring slow speed at startup, for flashing 12 cameras, our man had to cover a dist of 11 x 2km, i.e. 22kms.

As per report, he did it in just 5 mins...therefore our Man was travelling at a speed of 264 kms per hour....Minimum!!!

nomerci...sheikh zayed road is diff from D Ring...everyone will be tempted to drive fast, infact the slowest person would be driving at 100km speed...so juz think about ferrari's n other SUV's in Dubai...

I agree with nomerci. Be careful and avoid driving in D Ring especially in the evening of week ends.
