Another Arms race in the offing ?

Do we really need another arms race? Don't we already have enough weapons deployed ?
It's a difficult subject. As someone who is against the cuts Cameron is making to the British armed forces, I also find myself in a quandry regarding the statements from the Defense secretary.
Does this mean that the focus will now shift from Russia to china ?
US defence secretary Robert Gates says China's rapidly developing defence capabilities are worrisome to the US.
China has made strides in building a new stealth fighter jet and Washington is also concerned about a new ballistic missile that could theoretically explode an aircraft carrier nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometres) out to sea. China has also apparently beaten US estimates to develop that weapon.
"They [China] clearly have potential to put some of our capabilities at risk," Gates told reporters traveling with him to Asia. "We have to pay attention to them, we have to respond appropriately with our own programs." The US has long known that China wanted to field a stealth jet, but development outpaced US intelligence estimates, Gates said.

Sandtest, Let me quote what you said "Recently, due to Chinese intimidation, many Asian countries did not dare to participate in Nobel ceremony".
Can you give us the news source (URL) from where you got this from? Reuters? CNN? AFP? Or is it simply taken from your own over-active paranoid imagination due to your sinophobic nature?
linc, I was not talking about pre-wrold war era wars. I am talking about period after 1950 i.e. relatively modern era, no country has dared to engage China in direct war except India in 1962, though it resulted in largely Chinese victory, but India can take solace that it was able protect Dalai Lama and Tibetan voice for freedom.
I still do not believe that India can surpass China, but definately China will never be able to domintae or intimidate India as it does with countries like Vietnam, Philippines etc.
Recently, due to Chinese intimidation, many Asian countries did not dare to participate in Nobel ceremony except India.
sandtest--
'While contries like Japan & SoKo are economically developed, they have never engaged China in a direct war.'
What about the 1930s and 1940s, when Japan mopped the floor with both of them?
I agree that in the longterm, India will ultimately surpass China, as India has a much younger population and it is a nation that encourages innovation. This will not come to pass for several decades, however.
At present China is looking to domintae Asia only while slowly making their presence in Africa.
The biggest obstacle for China's Asia dominance is indeed India.
While contries like Japan & SoKo are economically developed, they have never engaged China in a direct war.
With India, China has fought a war. The economic and military rise of India & it's strategic location with Navy islands near Malacca Straits can block all Oil passage routes towards China during war.
It will be foolish if Chinese rulers think that in 21st century they can dominate world like USA did. USA was an isolated country during both world wars i.e. beyond the reach from any of the enemies.
While China is sitting right next. A future alliance between India-Japan-SoKo-Taiwan-Vietnam will be enough to deter China, in case US gets weak.
ex.ex.--don't waste your time. Sammiee is an semi-literate idiot, who, it seems, has only partly read one book.
Even if the Chinese send tens of thousands of people to study in the West, it won't help. The mindset that encourages innovation and invention is cultural. These students will learn the latest techniques and technologies, but one cannot teach someone how to think for themselves and innovate. That is why China will always be one step behind countries like Russia, the United States, the EU and, increasingly, India, which reward nonconformity and invention. Japan has the same problem.
A recent article in The Telegraph highlights the weaknesses of the Chinese Military. Its biggest failing is that it cannot, yet, produce the reliable jet engines it needs for its fighters, having to rely on Russia.
The Jin-class nuclear submarine is said, by the US Office of Naval Intelligence, to be noisier than the submarines built by the Soviets 30 years ago.
China’s fighter pilots are no match for US Top Guns. A shortage of foreign naval bases makes it difficult for China to maintain ships on long missions. Sailors who took part in exercises against Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden were reported to have run short of water and fresh food.
And perhaps most reassuringly, the new Dong Feng “carrier killer” missile is impaired by China’s undeveloped missile guidance system. While Beijing can launch the deadly missile, it is not clear it can actually hit a ship. Since US satellites would detect the missile upon launch, an aircraft carrier would have enough warning to move several miles out of the way.
My mistake in addressing that to you. I respect your position on alcohol and pork for yourself.
We Christians believe that the New Testament is just as much a part of the Bible as the Old Testament. The prohibition against pork in the Old Testament was abrogated by revelations in the New Testament. You are insulting us when you imply that the Bible we follow is not legitimate, and surely you don't want to do that, right? That would open up a can of worms about the Koran's legitimacy and that would better be discussed in the Religious Forum.
many chinese students studying in Russia and in west so soon they will be able to make new technology and innovate, as ex pilot,Russian technology is very good and very strong, when MiG was out,the US didn't have anything to catch up with the MiG,our fighter was too fast for them, true many Russian scientist left but they are comin back, russia isn't broke, your countries are broke,we have money and brain,so in very short time we come back.
xxxpat
i didn't asked for pigs and alcohol, and U know they were never of my interest.
and i'm agreed with Isobel that pigs are seen dirty in this part of the world, beside the fact that they are prohibited, but then alcohol is prohibited too, and still blindly served in liberal Muslim societies who are inspired by modernization.
Even China has made a Passenger Aircraft Prototype...
A new-generation short haul passenger aircraft solely developed in China has completed a successful trial flight, paving the way for commercial production next year, the manufacturer announced on Friday
britexpat--the Chinese will always be behind, because they do not encourage innovation and invention. Very little of what is produced in China is rooted in new Chinese technologies. Russia is a different matter, but it is broke and its best scientists have been lured away by Western universities.
You're right. the funny thing is that the Chinese engines are based on Russian design :0)
The US is still far ahead of Russia and China as far as fighter technology , especially avionics and radar / weapons systems are concerned ..
'Wine’s' served at Holy Communion, vaguely disguised as the blood of Christ.
Jesus did drink wine on many occasions- wine was, apart from water one of the few beverages drunk in those days.
American's are surely P*issed of at China for making
JF- 17 Thunder in collaboration with Pakistan...
Pork is only banned over here because Pigs are seen as dirty and 'rot' before any other meat.
As a Farmers daughter; Pigs are clean, cleaner than cows or sheep.
I eat all meat as animals are meant to be ate.
sammiee--Pork is banned in the Old Testament, but not in the New. Drunkeness, not alcohol, is frowned upon in both. In the accepted Christian texts, Jesus is depicted drinking wine on multiple occasions.
China's stealth bomber was made in China--underpaid labor using pirated technology to make something that is a cheep imitation of a quality product. The Chinese are not great innovators, but rather marginally good imitators. I am sure it can be tracked by the US.
Well, alcohol was/is consumed during certain services in church (don't recall which ones) so I'd say alcohol is not haram in Christianity.
Plus, did Jesus not drink win during the "last supper" ?
new Testament...DID Jesus( peace be upon him ) Wrote that... or anyone took permission to alter the original bible.
Who gave permission to alter gods book.
Alcohol in the Bible, I am not so sure except to say that moderation would be encouraged at the most liberal and complete avoidance by the much more conservative.
Pig ang alcohol are Prohibited in Bible...how many are following..surely u'l get peace when u follow right path..
is it written in Bible that democracy is the only available solution for peace?
i doubt, when i read the history and present of wars of these civilized countries.
Very interesting interview on Charlierose with Zbigniew Brzezinski -- the Carter era geopolitical Czar dealing with US-PRC relationship.

Japan & SoKo are uneasy not just with NoKo, but the fact that major support NoKo gets from China & ruling Chinese Communist party. Without China support, NoKo oppressive regime of dear leader Kim will fall like a pack of card. China is the one sustaining & feeding the regime to keep SoKo and Japan at bay and keep US engaged in endless quagmire, else their attention will shift towards democaratic Taiwan's legitimate demand for independence. It all geopolitics. What China never realizes is that Japan eventhogh has taken an oath for never manufacturing a Nuclear weapon, they are very much capable since major Nuclear reactor components for electricity are made by Japan. They are technologically monopoly in reactor field. Their pacifist constitution is holding Japan back
Japan and SoKo have been uneasy more about North korea than china. I doubt whether the Japanese, or for that matter Soko would want to enter into an arms race with china.
China is flexing its muscles on the world stage , but in a more low key way than Russia or the USA in the past.
China has effectively taken the place of Cold war era Russia, competing for supremacy against US.
The difference between Cold-War time USSR & China is that, China has dispute with almost all of it's neighbors. Let's keep Taiwans right for independence aside, even well developed countries like Japan & South Korea have started fearing for China's expansionist one party regime. Both SoKo & Japan look towards US for their protection.
If US in future fails to guarantee the security of those, then it is very much possible that Japan & SoKo might decide to go Nuclear ...they have technology.
lol cryspy, no, not phobia, experience.;)
ChinesePhobia sound like MuslimPhobia ;)
hmm, made in China...wouldn't worry too much...;)
he had to say this so that the expected defense cuts would be shelved. All politics :)
China -- a stealth ?? I can tell u it's nothing compared to the B2 Stealth, does it have laser guided missiles ???
t's business; purely business
