(APTN) A 700-year-old church in Romania's Transylvania region was badly damaged when a fire ripped through its tower, officials said.

The Rompres national news agency says the church's main spire, which at 75 metres (247-feet) was the highest in Transylvania, collapsed during Wednesday night's blaze.

Pictures on Romanian television showed firefighters, helped by residents and policemen, fighting to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby houses in the town's centre.

The church which is thought to be the oldest in the region is located in the town of Bistrita, 600 kilometres (373 miles) from Romania's capital, Bucharest.

No casualties were reported and the cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

The Gothic church dates back to the 14th century and was being restored before the fire started.

The building which is a part of Transylvania's heritage is considered an emblem of north-central Romania.

It reminded me, when four years ago, one of the oldest Serbian Orthodox Church monesteries monestery Hilandar on Mount Atos in Greece, burned in big fire. Unfortenately some historical treasure gone in fire.

I realy hope that EU funds and UNESCO will help in rebuilding burned Church in Romania.

usually...

Need to be rebuild the "Saxons' Towers" (part of the church) 76,5 m high; tallest bell-tower in Romania

The word 'Saxon' is believed to be derived from the word seax, meaning a variety of single-edged knives.

In Eastern Europe, Transylvania was one of the earliest areas of German colonization. Beginning already in the late twelfth century, this emigration is considered part of the Medieval Colonization Period of 1200-1400 AD.

Parish priest of the Roumanian Evanghelical Church, Johann Dieter Kraus, said that fortunately nothing inside the building had not suffered.

Instead, the two bells were destroyed.

Krauss said yesterday that a person takes reported that he saw two children who have descended on church shortly before behining fire.

The damages exceed one million euros, as needed over a year to bring the building in the state that was before the fire.
