Yes, i have also read that parrots commit suicide by starving themselves to death. Parrots have mind like that of a two-year old child, and keeping them as a pet, they need to feel that they are a part of the family so they have to be given a lot of attention, and when they feel unhappy or when they feel bored, that is when they start to starve themselves to death.

DEAR FRIEND I don't know of any animals besides humans who commit suicide for the pure sake of ending their lives, but bees die when they sting something (sacrifice themselves to scare away what might threaten the hive), deer stare stupidly at headlights and get run over instead of stepping aside (what is that, fear? Confusion? I'm not sure actually). And, of course, there are always wonderful, cute, tiny, suicidal lemmings (mythically suicidal at least, they don't actually mean to kill themselves). But squirrels? I'm willing to be they're just dumb. I say don't worry if you run one over, do your part to help natural selection.

it is a type of helplessness not suicide

Only the depressed ones... Guinea Pigs are especially prone to depression.

I don't know animals committing suicide, but I know that animals will suffer some kind of depression if they lose their partners. There is sufficient studies to prove animal depression.

As for the human side of the story, I witness my grand mother pass away at 65, then grandpa just melted away in depression and in six months he was Gone! He was 72.

My family spend a ton of money in experts and comfort for our grandpa, but is real hard for a man to recover from this kind of tragedy, specially when he was married for 45 years with the same person.

To answer the question, NO! Depression is the killer, not suicide.

For those bird pet lovers out there is best to find them a mate quickly.

apparently some whales drift ashore (on purpose) in attempt to "take matters in their own hands", although this is yet to be explained as a scientific suicidal phenomena wihtin mammals. Quite stunning if they prove it to be true as these whales would be doing it on purpose , which means that advanced perception and reasoning is not only limited to humans.

then again, you've got suicing humans; and since humans are mammals, and mammals are animals indeed, so you do have suiciding animals after all ;)
