is fish a meat?

ok, this is going to sound silly. i went to maccie d's today on a drive back from wales and my friend who's a supposed vegetarian gets the fish fillet? i drove on, and then i asked her why she was eating fish. everybody else tells me that she's only not supposed to eat meat, and fish is not a meat. but clearly, fish is a meat. she's not a vegetarian. she's eating dead animals.

it's really pissed me off for some reason... silly hormones :(

You can define it as per your convenience but if you eat egg or fish, you aren't vegetarian.

Apparently meat is from mammals, including whale meat, fish is from aquatic creatures.

Very many vegetarians eat fish and seafood, eggs, cheese and milk.People who won't touch any of those are vegans, and really strict vegans will have nothing to do with any by-product of a once living creature.

Hmmmm,,,,a lot of the vegetarians I know dont eat meat because they dislike the way the animals are reared using antibiotics and other artificial substances to enhance production.Others I know will occasionaly eat fish, reasoning that it is not contaminated with drugs etc. I suppose some people are just selective rather than exclusively vegetarian in what they cosider acceptable. Then again ,,,,there are those that just wish to appear trendy by claiming they are vegetarian. Each to their own really. On a lighter vein. Afriend of mine never ate meat,,,,I asked her once if she was a vegetarian for health or moral reasons,,,,"No darling,,,,,,boarding school,,,,put me and my sisters off meat for life"

Gosh people has it finally come down to arguing about Fish being meat? Seriously what happened to live and let live? You eat what you want and let the others eat what they want. End of the day we eat to live and notlive to eat.

The way i see it the veggies are contributing to providing people like me with MORE food...so the less you guys eat meat the more i'm going to enjoy that nice juicy tender steak, my burger king or my KFC.

Not according to the Catholic Church.

But my general rule is that if it has a face and a mother, it is meat.

haha i totally agree with you expat, i guess to some degree it can apply to a number of different countries, but i have my own personal ways of why i think this about britain. maybe it's because they're my own people, so their behaviour disgusts me even more than it would if i wasn't.

" the corrupt media, the stupid government which makes no actual sense, the materialism, the vanity, the arrogance, the naivety. pretty much everything."

Are you talking about Qatar? yes, this applies to many Western countries but just as easily applies to the current state of the Gulf ;)

And btw, I wasn't really questioning you nationality. I just found it strange that you never met people who called themselves vegetarians who eat fish.

what's good about being british?!

answer, nothing. i hate the country, the corrupt media, the stupid government which makes no actual sense, the materialism, the vanity, the arrogance, the naivety. pretty much everything.

lkinmond, i looked it up it said a pescovegetarian eats eggs and fish, and it has lactovegetarian for the dairy products and so on. So I don't know the specific names of the veggie types, I am no expert but I thought it was like that.

But more importantly, why should we care what other people eat? It is their body, their life, and therefore there choice! Let us worry about our own food, right?

@ Scotiabank: Not true - you are not a true vegetarian if you eat eggs and/or fish.

A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs.

A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products.

involved in the animal rights movement ho eat fish and eggs, and call themselves vegetarian. They don't eat beef, lamb, veal, pork or poultry. But fish seems to fly with a lot of 'em.

Fish is technically not meat. At the same time your friend is technically not a full fledged vegetarian. The term 'Pescatarian' is often what he/she would be called.
